Diverse Communities of the High Passes
Ladakh is home to a diverse set of tribal communities whose identities have evolved in close harmony with the region's challenging high-altitude environment. Major tribes include the Ladakhis of the Indus Valley, the nomadic Changpa pastoralists of the Changthang plateau, the Brokpa (Dard) community of Dah–Hanu, and the Balti and Purigpa communities of western Ladakh and Kargil.
