About Alchi Monastery
Alchi Monastery dates back to around 11th century and is one of the oldest surviving monastic complexes in Ladakh. Unlike most monasteries in the region, it is located on flat ground along the Indus River rather than on a hilltop.
The complex is renowned for its Indo-Kashmiri style wall paintings, wood carvings, and sculptures of exceptional artistic value. Alchi is administered by Likir Monastery and is maintained primarily as a heritage and pilgrimage site. Its artwork provides rare and valuable insights into early trans-Himalayan Buddhist art and cultural exchange.
