Hemis Tsechu

Likir Dosmoche

Mangtro Nagrang

Shey Doo Lhoo
Two annual festivals are celebrated here. The first, 'Shey Doo Lhoo,' occurs on the 26th and 27th days of the first Tibetan month (July or August in the Gregorian calendar) at Shey Palace, marking the start of the sowing season. It includes monastic rituals, religious rites, and attracts villagers for celebrations. During this festival, an oracle reader arrives on horseback, performs a three-day prayer, and gives prophecies while in trance. On the 30th day of the first Tibetan month, 'Shey Rul-lo' honors Buddha's life during Saka Dawa, the most sacred Buddhist holiday celebrating his birth, enlightenment, and death. Good deeds during this time are believed to multiply blessings.

Nomadic Festival
The festival is organized by Ladakh Cultural Academy in collaboration with Ladakh Tourism Department, aims to bring the distinctive culture of Changthang region on the tourism map of Ladakh. Tourists had the opportunity to witness a nomad’s lifestyle in their own environment, keeping alive and promoting the nomadic lifestyle of Changthang.The people of the Changthang are nomadic pastoralists, they are known as 'Changpa', for 'northerners,' or 'Drokpa' for 'nomads' in Tibetan. Unlike many other nomadic groups, the Changpa are not under pressure from settled farmers as the vast majority of land they inhabit is too inhospitable for farming.

Ashoora
Youm-e-Ashura is observed to pay tributes to Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad and his companions for their ultimate sacrifice in Karbala. The procession of 10th Moharram Ashura reciting Noha started from Jama Masjid Chhutey-Rangthak passing through Leh main Bazar and culminated at Immam Bargha Leh.Muharram is marked by large processions on the 10th day. Devotees parade the streets barefoot, carrying models of the mausoleum of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his people, and chanting 'Ya Hussain' while whipping their chests until they bleed. The processions are a sad occasion, marked by loud wails of lamentation.

Takthok Tsechu
Takthok (or “rock roof” in Ladakhi as the roof and walls are made of rock) gompa is the lone Nyingmapa (the oldest of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism) monastery in Ladakh. Takthok (means ‘Rock Roofed Cave’ in Ladakhi language) is a village located near Chemrey, between Leh and Pangong lake. Takthok monastery is one of its kind, the only Nyingma monastery (the oldest spiritual lineage of Tibetan Buddhism) in Ladakh. Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of the Nyingma order, brought the tradition of monastic dance in Tibetan Buddhism. He would dance to subdue obstacles and demons in Tibet during the reign of the King Trisong Detsen.

Phyang Tsedup Festival is one of the two old Monasteries in Dringungpa at Ladakh. The Phyang Tsedup Festival pageant is held during July to August. For the period of the pageant men throng within the Monastery dressed in colorful clothes and also carrying a lovely smile on their faces. All these seem to brighten up the mood of the carnival and therefore the sacred ceremony Phyang Frstival is well known with enthusiasm and potency in every single place. People from all over India and abroad throng the grounds of the Phyang Festival competition. The dance forms of the main ceremony of the Phyang Tsedup festival and apart from the worship of the Thankha of Jigten Gombo. The Lamas are dressed up in colorful attire and also play the various characters of the dance drama.

Stok Guru Tsechu
Ladakh’s Stok Guru Tsechu Festival is celebrated in the village of Stok, a short distance from Leh, in the first month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. The dates vary every year in accordance with Guru Padmasambhava’s birthday. It is believed that seven oracles inhabit Ladakh, two of which manifest themselves through chosen ones in Stok each year. The chosen oracles undergo a severe month-long retreat where they are prohibited from eating meat. On the day of the festival, the oracles go into a trance and dance along the rooftops of the monastery in flowing white costumes. The villagers bow their heads in prayer, offer Chang (locally brewed rice beer) and Tsampa (roasted barley flour), and await the predictions for the year ahead.

Sani Nasjal
The Celebration of Sani Naro-Nasjal, is held at the Sani or Sanee Monastery in Zanskar, Ladakh more often than not, in the principal seven day stretch of August. The celebration happens amid the blossoming of the Guru Naropa Flower, at some point between the fifteenth and the twentieth of the 6th Tibetan month. Sani Naro-Nasjal is usually in the first week of August . Consistently the statue of Naropa is disclosed on the eve of the celebration. Lamas from the Bardan religious community perform conceal moves as custom contributions previously the symbol. The monastery is also claimed to be connected with the famous Indian Yogi Naropa (956-1041 CE).

Karsha Gustor
Karsha Gustor 03th -04th July, 2024 Karsha is the largest and most important monastery in Zanskar. It is attributed to Padmasambhava, and there are ancient rock-carvings at the site. The oldest remaining structure, an Avalokiteshvara temple, Chuk-shik-jal, contains wall paintings which seem to associate it with the era of Rinchen Zangpo. The popular festival held in the monastery precincts is called the Gustor festival, celebrated between the 26th and 29th day of the sixth month of the Tibetan calendar, when events such as the sacred masked cham dance take place. The monastery also has bone relics of Dorje Rinchen and serves as the residence of approximately 100 monks.

Kargil Vijay Diwas
This significant event marks the 25th anniversary, or Rajat Jayanti of Kargil Vijay Diwas, celebrating India’s momentous victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. The rally was organised by Indian Army.This memorial is a solemn tribute to the valiant soldiers who fought and sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War in since 1947-48. The memorial features plaques and inions that detail the heroic deeds of the soldiers in all four battles fought with Pakistan since 1947-48. It includes names of the martyrs, their regiments, and the battles they fought, ensuring their legacy is preserved for future generations. Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 26th July to rekindle the pride and valour of the soldiers who took part in Operation Vijay. The day marks the victory of Indian soldiers in capturing the mountain heights that were occupied by the Pakistani Army on Jul 26, 1999 known as the Kargil War.

Celebrating River Indus that runs across Ladakh, Sindhu Darshan Festival is definitely a must-see festival in Ladakh. Held at Shey Manla, some odd 8 km from Leh, this major festival in Ladakh is a three-day event that begins on the day of Guru Purnima. The major reason for the celebration of Sindhu Darshan Festival is to endorse the Indus River as an icon of the communal harmony and unity of India. The festival was celebrated in 1997 first, but from the year 2000, it has become a grand affair. During this festival in Ladakh, participants from across India bring water in an earthern pot from the river of their own state and pour it into the Indus River. On the first day of the festival, a reception ceremony for all the participants of different religions is conducted.
